Heartbeat Victoria has been supporting the development of the Australian Cardiovascular Disease Data Commons (ACDC). In conjunction with The Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute and Australian BioCommons, this project takes Australian cardiovascular data (blood, proteins fats and other measures) and health outcome data from population studies and clinical trials to the next level, to provide a library (Data Commons) of information about the Australian population and their biological profile in relation to heart disease.
Across Australia, many valuable research projects are examining different aspects of cardiovascular disease. Their findings can reveal potential contributors to heart disease, including possible causes in people with no recognised risk factors. In fact, up to 27% of cardiac events occur without obvious risk factors. However, research findings are stored in different locations and use varying measures and terminology.
The Australian Cardiovascular Data Commons (ACDC) project is bringing this information together in a shared library, making it easier for researchers to access and use. This means rather than having the results for 500 Australians, there are results for hundreds of thousands of people, giving much more precise odds for our population and developing screening, testing and treatments that are more accurate for the Australian population.
Heartbeat Victoria is very proud to be a part of this important project.
